How to Show Up Abroad Confidently —Even When It’s Messy & Imperfect

How to Show Up Abroad—Even When It’s Messy & Imperfect

Moving to a new country is a bold move—but showing up in that country, fully and visibly, is a whole other level of courage. Whether you’re living abroad for work, love, adventure, or reinvention, there’s a common challenge many of us face as expat women:

“I don’t feel ready.”
“What if I mess up?”
“Who am I to speak up or be visible here?”

In this video, I dive into what it really means to show up abroad—especially when you feel messy, unsure, or not quite ready. I share personal stories, mindset shifts, and actionable tips to help you build confidence, overcome perfectionism, and embrace visibility wherever you are in the world.

Why Showing Up Abroad Matters

You might think you need the perfect plan, flawless language skills, or local status to make an impact—but the truth is, your presence is more powerful than perfection.

Here’s why showing up (as you are) makes all the difference:

Visibility Creates Opportunity
People can’t support you, collaborate with you, or hire you if they don’t know you exist.

You Inspire Others
Your courage to be seen helps other women believe they can, too.

Confidence Grows With Action
Confidence is not a prerequisite—it’s the result of consistently showing up.

What’s Holding You Back?

Most expat women I’ve worked with—and my own experience moving to the US—face a mix of these common blocks:

  • Fear of judgment or not belonging

  • Language or cultural barriers

  • Perfectionism and comparison

  • The belief that you need to “earn” your place first

Sound familiar?

You’re not alone. And you don’t have to have it all figured out to take the next step.

Showing Up Looks Different Around the World

Cultural norms and expectations shape how visibility is perceived across countries:

In the US, assertiveness and personal branding are often celebrated.
In Japan, subtlety, modesty, and harmony are valued.
In India, speaking up is encouraged in some settings but may still carry cultural nuances around gender and seniority.
In parts of Europe, authenticity and confidence are key, but not necessarily “loudness.”

When you have a global mindset, it’s about respecting the culture you’re in while still honoring your voice.

The Kaizen Method: Tiny Steps, Big Impact

One of the most powerful tools I’ve used to build confidence is the Kaizen Method—a Japanese approach to continuous improvement through small, consistent steps.

Instead of waiting until you’re 100% ready:

  • Say yes to a small speaking opportunity

  • Post something vulnerable on LinkedIn

  • Introduce yourself at a networking event

  • Hit “record” on that video—even if you’re nervous

Every action builds momentum. Every small move makes a big difference.

Tips to Overcome Perfectionism & Start Showing Up

  1. Lower the bar—your “B-minus” work can still change lives.

  2. Focus on impact, not impression.

  3. Start with one platform or one moment.

  4. Practice self-compassion—you’re learning, not performing.

  5. Find your community—being surrounded by supportive women makes it so much easier to be brave.

“A ship in harbor is safe, but that’s not what ships are built for.” – John A. Shedd

You weren’t meant to play small. You were meant to explore, connect, and grow—even when it feels messy. Especially then.
